Denim Distress

I’m in the market for a dark washed, knee-length, a-line denim skirt that sits below the waist. I’d like a casual alternative to the same old bermudas and capris I find myself wearing. I have the denim skirt of my dreams in my mind but have not had any luck finding it in real life.

Yesterday while shopping at Macy’s I asked a sales clerk if they had any denim skirts. She said, “Um, no. We don’t have denim skirts but we do have a denim halter dress over there.” Right. A denim halter dress is the next best thing, of course. Gah! I’d look pretty awesome showing up to help out for Teacher Appreciation week in a denim halter dress. If only it was acid-washed, it would have been mine.

So, when I can’t find what I want in a brick and mortar store, I turn to Old Faithful, the Internet. You wanna see what I found and why I’m so discouraged?!

Exhibit A: I checked out Old Navy first since they bombard my inbox with ads all the time. Apparently, knee-length is out and mini is in… This would look like a belt on me. And it wouldn’t provide much thigh/cellulite coverage.

Exhibit B: I clicked on over to Old Navy’s snootier cousin, The Gap, with hopes of finding something a little more modest. It was like chambray overload over there! I guess chambray is like denim but lighter weight? It looks that way. Anyhoo, drawstring, tiered and long is not what I had in mind.

Ooo, look! You can wear the skirt as a halter dress too. Sweet. Take that, Macy’s!!!!

Exhibit C: I don’t even recall where this skirt is from but I’ll just say that there is no way I’m strutting around with Pirate patches on my butt! Looks kind of wrinkly, doesn’t it? The dark wash is nice though.

Exhibit D: This is a little bit too “Prairie Home Companion” for my taste. It’s from Shepplers if you want to pick one up for yourself.

Exhibit E: From Monterey Bay I give you a peek at their ghastly collection.

Banana Republic, NY & Co. and J. Crew didn’t have exactly what I was looking for either… There were some options that were close but not exactly right.

I can’t take it anymore! Isn’t an a-line, knee length skirt a wardrobe basic?! I watch enough What Not to Wear to know a few principles about dressing myself. A-line, knee-length and dark wash denim are fashion dos for this sister!!! *sigh*

Clothes shopping can be rough when you have something specific in mind. Ugh. You might check out Mervyn’s if there’s one around you. I tend to have pretty good luck there. And I totally second the knee-length a-line dark wash. It’s a good, standard piece. I hope you can find one you like.

Let me know if you find anything… I’m in the market for one myself.

When you said the one skirt was too prarie home companion… I thought “amish! if they wore denim!” 🙂

You should dress me too because I’m HORRIBLE at it. What compliments an overweight 4″11 body?
