The Monkey Crawl and Other Skills

Swim lessons officially began on Monday.

(Cutie Pie is the one in the middle in the blue rash guard)

This is the first year that I have not had to enter the water with a child as part of a Mom and Tot class!  Woo hoo!  Hooray for swimming skills and not having to don a bathing suit in public.  Instead I get to slowly melt in the heat while I watch my children from the pool deck.  At least there is an awning.

Both of our boys are good swimmers already so swim lessons aren’t about learning to actually tread water and survive a watery encounter.  I guess it comes with the territory when you live in Florida.  It’s pretty much a necessity that children learn to swim competently at a young age when there is so much water around.  I am thankful that our three-year-old can dive down to the bottom of the deep end to retrieve dive rings and pull himself out of the water from the side of the pool.

This year, swim lessons this year are more about fine tuning our boys’ skills.  I’d like them to learn the different strokes (not Diff’rent Strokes) and I would like Cutie Pie to learn to float on his back.

Of course, getting to jump off the starting blocks is another perk…

Swim Like a Fish

So, I love my water resistant camera!  I can get awesome shots like this one of Cutie Pie at Mom and Tot swim lessons.  That’s right, it’s that time of year again!  We’re in swim lessons for two weeks.  Every day for half an hour.  It’s an awful lot of effort for a 30 minute swim session but the boys love it.

Wildman is in his own class again.  He takes off as soon as we hit the pool deck.  He knows right where to go and does his thing.  I’m so proud of him.  He’s such a good little swimmer.

Cutie Pie is in the Mom and Tot class with me.  J has come a couple of times as well.  For the most part, Cutie Pie likes swimming but when the water is too cold or he’s tired, watch out!  He’ll scream 🙂

He’s doing very well with going under water.  We pass him back and forth.  He knows to hold his breath at the count of three and he kicks his little legs.  It’s very cute.

Of course, jumping in is a favorite activity.

I’m hoping to have Cutie Pie swimming without water wings by the end of the summer.  Once our pool is completed I think he’ll get plenty of practice.  🙂

I’m Alive and the Last Minute Gift Rush

Thanks for all the well wishes yesterday! I feel so much better today. Luckily, my sinus funk was short-lived.

Do you know that I came thisclose to forgetting my mother-in-law’s birthday?! I have it marked in my Outlook calendar and thankfully, the reminder popped up this morning. Whew! I don’t know what it is about June 24th but I cannot remember that date to save my life. I’ve got most of my relatives’ birthdays emblazoned on my brain but not hers. Yipe. So, I griped at J for not reminding me. He was all “Oh, I saw the reminder on the calendar yesterday…” It would have been nice if he told me!!!!

So, I went with J to swim lessons this morning to help him get the kids set up. Then I took off for the nearest department store that also happens to have a gift wrap service. I was in search of new bake ware.

My in-laws remodeled their kitchen last year and my MIL has yet to upgrade her cookware. She has some stuff that was made before I was born. Seriously, harvest gold and avocado aren’t exactly “in” colors anymore. Old school orange and brown Tupperware that “burps” when you push the button isn’t exactly what you see anymore. And that crap kind of clashes with shiny, new granite and stainless steel appliances, no? I don’t care if it’s still functional. Enough is enough. Toss out the dinosaurs! Get something new already! Can you tell I’m frustrated with the cookware museum that is in their cabinets and the excuses they give for not upgrading?

I found a sweet set of white bake ware. It has a rectangular baker, a square baker and two square ramekins. The edges are wavy and each piece has two handles on the sides. It’s pretty. It’s functional. It’s understated. It’s modern. If she doesn’t use them, so help me, my head will spin around. I might do something drastic. The 70’s must go! We’re going over there this evening to bestow our present. Wish us luck.

Here are a few photos from swim lessons yesterday.
